The Power of Public Speaking
Public speaking is one of the most powerful fears that people identify. The National Institute of Mental Health (2017) reports that public speaking anxiety affects approximately 73% of the general population, mostly because of the anxiety and fear of judgment or negative evaluation by others. The degree of anxiety can range from experiencing panic attacks to merely getting butterflies in one’s stomach (Forbes, 2011). Feeling comfortable and confident when speaking in public is becoming more and more important in our lives, especially in the workplace. Our ability to speak well in public puts us front and center in interviews, meetings, and conferences, and enhances our opportunities for leadership.
